Tōji Continued

And this was everyone else enjoying the market aspect of the day.

A day in Tōji

This Sunday I visited the Tōji Temple market in Kyoto. While there I was able to observe people enjoying both the temple and the market. This happened to be a particularly nice day, so naturally it was very crowded.

These pictures are of people embracing the more spiritual elements of the temple.

Old Age Home

As the Japanese Government prepares for the upcoming years, new facilities are being built to house those senior citizens who require additional care their families cannot provide. Nearly 45% of the 2007 fiscal budget was set aside for social security expenditures, a figure amounting to 21.1 trillion Yen. This being the government’s largest area of focus no doubt shows its awareness and commitment to this rapidly approaching problem

These are pictures of a newly built Senior Citizen Centre or "Old Folks Home".

Ageing Japan

For my final project I have decided to focus on the elderly of Japan. Japan is a country that already has over 20% of its population over the age of 65, and with a low national birthrate (only 0.02%), and rather strict immigration laws the projected age demographic numbers within the next 20 years see nearly 50% of Japan’s population over 65.

With the main goal of this project being “beautiful Japan” I wanted to try and show how the elderly can be “beautiful” in their own way.

This picture was taken last October in Hiroshima. This man was painting a picture of the Atomic Bomb Dome.
